China鈥檚 International Development Cooperation: Theory, Policy, and Practice

This course introduces students to the major theories, policies and practices of China鈥檚 international development cooperation. It analyzes relevant historical background, policy frameworks, functioning dynamics and comprehensive impacts. It covers various areas in international development, including finance, trade, infrastructure, agriculture, industry, economic cooperation zones, etc.

Based on materials directly collected from field research and extensive second-hand literature, the course explains the cooperation between China and developing countries from multiple perspectives. Opportunities and challenges will be identified in the current cooperation with emerging countries. Compared with China鈥檚 own development experience, the discussion on South-South cooperation can also shed light on how China鈥檚 success can be replicated in other developing countries. Finally, combined with readings on Karl Marx, Adam Smith, David Ricardo, Karl Polanyi, and other thinkers, this course also aims to deepen the theoretical understanding of modernization and the globalization process.
