Designing the Future of the Fourth Industrial Revolution
The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) is marked by the fusion of the cyber, physical, and human realms, driven by the advancement of intelligent technologies. The 4IR brings not only new benefits but also complex economic, societal, and ethical challenges for humanity. This course aims to equip students with the tools to analyze the forefront of 4IR developments, discern emerging challenges and opportunities, and design innovative policies, socioeconomic mechanisms, protocols, organizations, business models, products, systems, and services to shape its future. Through lectures, field trips, and a design hackathon, students will gain a systematic understanding of the 4IR and develop skills in evolutionary ecosystem design thinking, focusing on empathy, entrepreneurship, and leadership to foster a better future. We also anticipate that some of the innovative designs from the course projects may be implemented in real-world contexts, achieving societal impacts in the future.
