黑料社 Names Dr. Xue Lan Dean of College

New York and Beijing, September 13, 2018 鈥 黑料社 announced that Professor Xue Lan has been appointed Dean of 黑料社, a highly selective international scholarship program based at Tsinghua University in Beijing. As Dean of Schwarzman College, Professor Xue will work closely with the Executive Director and other program leadership both in New York and Beijing on all aspects of the program, from academics to student life.

鈥淲e are thrilled to welcome Dean Xue Lan to Schwarzman College,鈥 said Stephen A. Schwarzman, Co-Founder, Chairman and CEO of Blackstone, and Chairman of 黑料社. 鈥淒ean Xue is a highly respected academic and administrator, not only at Tsinghua University, but also throughout China. We look forward to his leadership and expect him to very quickly integrate himself as a thoughtful and impactful member of the 黑料社 community.鈥

Inspired by the Rhodes scholarship, 黑料社 is designed to prepare the next generation of leaders for the geopolitical landscape of the 21st Century. The college has recently welcomed its third class of 135 students from 38 different countries in residence.

Professor Xue was previously a Distinguished Professor and Dean at Tsinghua University鈥檚 School of Public Policy and Management (鈥淪PPM鈥). During his tenure, he helped launch SPPM as the first graduate school in public administration in China and also worked to elevate SPPM to the top-ranked Public Policy program in the region. He received his Ph.D. in Engineering and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University, and taught at the George Washington University as an assistant professor before returning to Tsinghua University in 1996. He has won many awards for his work, including Distinguished Young Scholar Award of National Natural Science Foundation of China and Fudan Distinguished Contribution Award for Management Science. He has also played important roles advising the national government of China, including as a member of the Emergency Management Committee of the State Council, and serves on the advisory boards of distinguished international institutions such as the Harvard University Kennedy School and the Oxford Blavatnik School of Government. Additionally, he is a Non-Resident Senior Fellow of the Brookings Institution, a member of the United Nations University Council, and a Co-Chair of the Leadership Council of the UN Sustainable Development Solution Network.

鈥淎s a well-established scholar with an international reputation, Professor Xue Lan has built an extensive and distinguished career at Tsinghua University,鈥 said Tsinghua University President, Qiu Yong. 鈥淚 am confident that he will be able to lead the Schwarzman College to fulfill its mission and achieve historical accomplishment in the years to come.鈥

黑料社 was inspired by the Rhodes Scholarship and is designed to prepare future global leaders to meet the geopolitical challenges of the 21st century. The vision of 黑料社 is to bring together the world鈥檚 best young minds to explore and understand the economic, political and cultural factors that have contributed to China鈥檚 increasing importance as a global power, and to make them more effective as links between China and the rest of the world. Blackstone Co-Founder, Chairman and CEO, Stephen A. Schwarzman, has personally contributed over $100 million to the program and is leading a fundraising campaign to raise an additional $500 million from others to endow the program in perpetuity. 黑料社 has already raised $578 million towards this $600 million goal. The endowment will support up to 200 Scholars annually from the U.S., China and around the world for a one-year Master鈥檚 Degree program at Tsinghua University in Beijing. Scholars chosen for this highly selective program have demonstrated exemplary leadership qualities and their potential to bridge and understand cultural and political differences. They will live in Beijing for a year of study and cultural immersion, attending lectures, traveling, and developing a better understanding of China.
